What is Play Therapy?

PLAY THERAPY is a dynamic, interpersonal relationship between a client and therapist trained in play therapy who provides selected expressive mediums and facilitates the development of a safe relationship in order for the client to be vulnerable to express and explore the self through play (Landreth). 

 

What is Dialectical Behavior Therapy?

DIALECTICAL BEHAVIOR THERAPY was developed by Marsha Linehan (1990’s) to treat individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder.   Traditionally, it consists of weekly skills training group and weekly individual psychotherapy participation.  Core skill sets include: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation and interpersonal effectiveness skills. 

What is Playful Living?

PLAYFUL LIVING © combines brain development and mental health psychoeducation; established play therapy theories and techniques with core beliefs and skill sets of Dialectical Behavior Therapy. It recognizes the importance of play in identifying solutions, reducing self judgments, improving coping and social skills and developing healthy relationships.  It includes the use of music, art, narrative and movement therapies to process trauma and emotionally upsetting experiences

 Playful Living also follows a DBT model by striving to: encourage and empower clients to change maladaptive patterns, build on current capabilities; facilitate use of new skills in all environments and provides a specific structure for clients.  It requires, when possible, skills training and psychotherapy.  It is interactive and provides opportunities for clients to practice skills.
